Official Result: KyeongPyo Kim defeats Asikeerbai Jinensibieke at 0:30 of Round 

The most experienced fighter in the competition, China’s Asikeerbai Jinensibieke looked to add to his 36 career victories, while South Korean finisher KyeongPyo Kim had his own plans for moving forward to the lightweight semifinals.

Official Result: Lu Kai defeats Angga by TKO (strikes) at 4:33 of Round 2

The fourth contest in the featherweight tournament pitted judo black belt Lu Kai against 11-year Indonesian pro Angga in a battle of proven finishers.

After banging it out on the feet in the opening round and showcasing the diversity of his striking arsenal, Lu finished the round with a slick level change and takedown that set the stage for his efforts in the second. Almost immediately, the Chinese judoka changed levels and cut the corner, putting Angga on the deck and quickly transitioning to a scarf hold position, where Lu alternated between attacking chokes and armbars and bashing home heavy strikes.

HyunSung Park put his unblemished record on the line against Indonesian finisher Jeremia Siregar in the final opening round bout in the flyweight competition.

Official Result: HanSeul Kim defeats John Adajar by submission (triangle armbar) at 4:37 of Round 1

The fourth episode of Road to UFC: Singapore opened with a non-tournament bout in the welterweight division, as John Adajar of the Philippines faced off with 31-year-old South Korean HanSeul Kim.

The welterweights worked at a frenetic pace to start the contest, sling leather and stinging one another with heavy shots early in the first round. Midway through the frame, Kim dropped Adajar in the center of the cage, and from there, the South Korean refused to let this get to the second round.

Official Result: Top Noi Kiwram defeats Yuma Horiuchi by unanimous decision (29-28. 29-27, 29-27)

Flyweights with similar records and styles faced off in this flyweight affair as Yuma Horiuchi took on Top Noi Kiwram.

Kiwram had fun playing to the crowd and styling on Horiuchi in the opening stanza, stinging his Japanese opponent with sharp strikes while displaying a speed and power advantage. Horiuchi headed the pointed, fiery directions from Colin Oyama between rounds and turned to his grappling in the second, putting Kiwram on the canvas and controlling the action there for the duration of the frame, threatening with chokes from back mount.

Official Result: Rinya Nakamura defeats Gugun Gusman by submission (Americana) at 2:34 of Round 1

Former U23 wrestling world champion Rinya Nakamura faced off with Gugun Gusman in Episode 3’s bantamweight tournament matchup.

Official Result: Josephine Knutsson defeats YeDam Seo by unanimous decision (30-27, 30-27, 30-26)

Female fighters get in on the action in Singapore as YeDam Seo squared off with Sweden’s Josephine Knutsson in the strawweight opener.

Anshul Jubli vs Sho Patrick Usami

Due to issues with weight management, Sho Patrick Usami has been removed from his lightweight bout against Anshul Jubli (5-0, fighting out of New Delhi, India). As Jubli made weight (155.5), he will proceed to the next round of the Road to the UFC tournament.

Action shifted to the featherweight division in the final bout of the evening, as Chan Sung Jung protégé JunYoung Hong squared off with Satoru Kitaoka student Koyomi Matsushima in the second quarterfinal contest.

Good kicks out of the chute from Hong, mixing it up to the body and inside lead leg, prompting Matsushima to look to grapple momentarily. As Hong defended, the duo reset in the center and opted to get loose with their strikes, the South Korean continuing to attack with kicks and his Japanese counterpart mixing things up a little more.

Midway through the round, Matsushima made a nice read, collecting a kick attempt and closing the distance, leading to a quick clash in close between the two. He used that opportunity to secure a waist lock, and as he broke, Matsushima elevated and connected with a jumping knee in close. Hong took it well and looked to respond, showing his resolve and grit.

Late in the frame, Matsushima pulled the legs out from under Hong, spilling him to the canvas, but he failed to land anything significant from the position before the horn sounded.

Seconds later, Matsushima hit a beautiful step-through throw, tossing Hong to the canvas and landing in side control. Hong rolled to all fours and stood, but was quickly returned to the canvas, with Matsushima content to stay sticky around his waist and land short knees while controlling the position.

Down the stretch, Matsushima showed his class, laying in some solid strikes while continuing to control Hong and frequently spill him to the ground.

When the tens and nines were tallied, Matsushima took home a split decision win and a berth in the semifinals.

Official Result: Qui Lun defeats Wallen Del Rosario by unanimous decision (30-27, 30-27, 30-27

Former Dana White’s Contender Series contestant Qui Lun looked to have more success in his second attempt to work towards a place on the UFC roster, but Filipino flyweight Wallen Del Rosario was standing in his way, holding the same aspirations.

Patient, technical start to the fight between Lun and Del Rosario, as each worked from distance, looking to find and establish their range, neither landing too much of note through the opening three minutes. Each man were mostly throwing single strikes, with Lun attacking with kicks and Del Rosario individual punches before the Chinese athlete attacked with a combination along the fence.

Those shots opened up a cut and prompted Del Rosario to shoot for a takedown, working hard to finish and end up on Lun’s back, hooks in, for the final minute of the frame. While he wasn’t able to threaten with anything, he should draw confidence from getting the fight to the canvas successfully and landing in a significant control position.

Del Rosario came out looking to be more aggressive to start the second, but after he grazed Lun with a side kick, the Chinese fighter responded with a superior effort of his own, earning an acknowledgement from the Filipino. Soon after, a low blow paused the action, but the two resumed after less than a minute break and no penalty for the accidental foul.

Much like in the second, Lun was just the more active, accurate of the two as they remained standing throughout the final stanza. Though he was measured with his output, his bursts were successful and De Rosario couldn’t respond, leading to an obvious victory and a trip to the semifinals for the DWCS contestant Lun.

Official Result: Jeka Saragih defeats Pawan Maan by KO (spinning backfist) at 2:24 of Round 3

Lightweights kicked off the tournament action on the second episode of the Road to UFC: Singapore series, with Jeka Saragih putting his tidy two-fight winning streak on the line against 36-year-old veteran Pawan Maan of India.

Saragih throwing heavy kicks right out of the chute, threatening high and stinging Maan low, prompting the Indian veteran to search for the clinch. Saragih elevated Maan and deposited him on the canvas, settling into side control, looking to isolate an arm. Maan was able to avoid the Americana, but gave up his back, prompting Saragih to bury knees into his midsection and maintain control as he rode the hips and controlled the body of Maan.

Late in the round, Saragih started to unload more offence, letting go of his hands and stinging Maan. The veteran took too long clambering to his feet when he had the opportunity, and Saragih made him pay for it, continuing to control the action and score with his hands through to the horn.

Right out of the gate in the third, Saragih stung Maan and put him on the canvas, but the Indian veteran wore it well, got back to his feet, and went on the offensive. For some reason, the power hitter pressed into the clinch and looked for a takedown on the cage, despite being down on the cards and needing a finish.

As the two clinched midway through the final stanza, Saragih broke the position and stepped through with a picture perfect spinning backfist that landed flush, depositing Maan on the canvas and ending the fight in a flash. Just an absolute crushing blow to bring an end to the contest!

Official Result: Takeru Uchida defeats Shaun Etchell by submission (rear-naked choke) at 3:26 of Round 1

A non-tournament bout in the flyweight division got things under way on Episode 2, as 28-year-old Tasmanian Shaun Etchell squared off with the youngest fighter to appear on the series, Japanese 19-year-old Takeru Uchida.

Uchida in on the takedown attempt immediately to begin this one, but Etchell did a terrific job fighting to stay upright before landing in top position as they spun to the canvas.  He tried to work around to the back, but lost the position, with Uchida taking the opportunity work towards a back take midway through the round.

MinWoo Kim vs Xiao Long

Due to illness with Xiao Long, his bantamweight bout against MinWoo Kim (10-2, fighting out of Nowon, Seoul, South Korea, weighing in at 135.5) has been cancelled from Road To UFC Episode 2. After making weight, Kim will advance to the second round of the Road to UFC tournament.  

Official Result: WonBin Ki defeats Jinnosuke Kashimura by TKO (strikes) at 4:45 of Round 1

A late addition to the tournament, 20-year-old Jinnosuke Kashimura looked to secure the biggest win of his career as he stepped in opposite South Korean veteran WonBi Ki in this lightweight quarterfinal matchup.

Kashimura looked to complete a flying triangle attempt in the final two minutes of the opening frame, failing to connect and ending up on his back, eating punishing blows from Ki. While he continued hunting for attacks off his back, Ki continued raining down blows, bringing referee Jason Herzog in for a closer look, prompting him to stop the fight.

Excellent job of avoiding danger and finishing when the opportunity presented itself by Ki, who carries a gnarly new scar over his left eye into the next round of the lightweight competition.

Official Result: Toshiomi Kazama defeats Maimaitituoheti Keremuaili by unanimous decision (30-27, 30-27, 29-28)

Streaking 31-year-old Maimaitituoheti Keremuaili carried a seven-fight winning streak into the competition, where he faced off with surging Japanese prospect Toshiomi Kazama in a highly anticipated bantamweight pairing.

No feeling out process for these two, as Maimaitituoheti glanced with a pair of front kicks up the middle in the opening minute before Kazama grabbed hold of a body lock and turned him to the canvas with force. Maimaitituoheti worked his way back to the fence, but Kazama stayed sticky on top, working to mount while passing the wrist of Maimaitituoheti behind his own back. The veteran defended well, eventually working back to his feet and throwing with urgency in the waning moments of the first.

Maimaitituoheti came out looking to strike to begin the final round, but Kazama was keen on grappling, pulling guard early and working to stay connected to Maimaitituoheti as much as he could. A right hand crashed home from Kazama that seemed to sting Maimaitituoheti, opening the door for another grappling exchange on the canvas, with Kazama showing outstanding control to work around to a back waist lock as the two clambered back to their feet.

Kazama stayed with Maimaitituoheti as he looked to Granby roll, but the veteran continued transitioning, landing in top position. Once more, Kazama elevated him and looked to create transitions and sweeps off his back, with Maimaitituoheti firing off the odd effective shot when he could. Late in the round, Kazama hit another deft sweep, transitioning into side control and creating another scramble that persisted through to the final bell.

This was a tremendously entertaining grappling match and a big win for the 25-year-old from Japan, who advances to the semifinals with the unanimous decision victory.

There was more of a feeling out process from the flyweights in the opening tournament bout, as Choi and Supandhi worked to find and establish their range, neither getting too far out ahead of the other through the opening half of the first round. Choi started having more success in the second half of the frame, smashing home a series of heavy inside low kicks and frequently calling on Supandhi to meet him in the pocket and trade.

Supandhi worked to his feet with 90 seconds remaining and threw with urgency, but Choi met him on his terms, stuffed the last-ditched takedown attempts, and cruised to victory and a place in the semifinals of the flyweight tournament.

Business got under way in the light heavyweight division, with a non-tournament matchup between 23-year-old Chinese hopeful Zhang Mingyang and Sanford MMA product Tuco Tokkos.
