Co-main: Featherweight Ricardo Lamas defeats Diego Sanchez by unanimous decision
An exciting contest between the original Ultimate Fighter winner Sanchez and No. 4 ranked featherweight Lamas. The key to the fight seemed to come in the second round when Lamas began targeting Sanchez’s right ankle and calf with vicious kicks from the standup position. He nailed four in a row and continued focusing on it the rest of the round. The two exchanged blows in the 3rd Round until Lamas again hit that ankle/calf area and sent Sanchez towards the cage for a significant amount of the round, mostly playing defense. There were a few flurries before the end of the third and final round, but the damage was done and the judges’ verdict was a unanimous decision for Lamas (30-27, 30-27, 30-27)

Ricardo Lamas: “I think this win solidifies my place in the division. I don’t think I’ll get a title shot next, but whoever they put in front of me to get a title shot, that’s who I want.”

Flyweight Henry Cejudo defeats Jussier Formiga

The highly-anticipated flyweight battle went the distance, and the judges give Henry Cejudo a split decision victory (30-27, 30-27, 28-29). The result keeps Cejudo undefeated with a 10-0 MMA record.

Henry Cejudo: “I wanted to keep it standing because when you’re going against a guy like Jussier Formiga who has world class jiu jitsu, your goal has to be to keep it on the feet. He kicked me in the first round and I checked the kick and I’ve got a pretty big welt on my shin at that point I knew I’d have to keep it standing and use a lot of technique to pull off the win. I’m a really good matchup for Demetrious Johnson next. I’m a wrestler and I know how to defend his takedowns. When the time comes, I’ll be ready. I deserve it.”
Jussier Formiga: “Sometimes it’s just not your night. If I could change anything, I think that I would risk more and would try to knock him out.”

Enrique Barzola: “I’m happy for him, although I do not agree with the result. He is my friend and I wish the best for him.”

The Ultimate Fighter Latin America 2 lightweight final: Enrique Barzola defeats Horacio Gutierrez by unanimous decision

Gutierrez simply had no answer for Barzola’s wrestling in this matchup. From the outset, Barzola got takedown after takedown against the Mexican-born Gutierrez and dominated each and every round. After going the distance, the judges’ scorecard reflected as much (30-27, 30-27, 30-26) to make Peruvian Barzola the newest Ultimate Fighter Latin America winner.

Leandro Silva: “I knew this was going to be a tough fight. Efrain is a great athlete, but I prepared myself really well and I knew that I would take the victory with me. In the second round he took me to the ground, but I was still able to follow my strategy. Fighting with the crowd against me is not new for me, it has happened a few times before but I used that pressure in a positive way and to give the fans a good show.”
Efrain Escudero: “I thought I hesitated a bit. I thought I did enough to win the fight, but I guess not. Back to the drawing board.”

UFC Fight Night: Magny vs. Gastelum FS1 prelims

Bantamweight Erik Perez defeats Taylor Lapilus by unanimous decision

What a fight! The crowd was with their native son Erik “Goyito” Perez from the outset and the energy in the building made for an electric fight which featured a little bit of everything – punches, kicks, wrestling, etc. The two budding superstars went the distance, but Perez took control of the fight as the minutes wore on and claimed the judges’ decision unanimously (29-28, 29-28, 29-28)

They said it:
Erik Perez: “At first I was really nervous. It took me the first round to get into the rhythm of the fight. In the second round I felt much better and I was more comfortable in the Octagon. What happened is magical, all the energy of my people was amazing. Having my big return happen in Monterrey is something that I will never forget. All I do in the Octagon is for my fans, so this victory is for them.”
Taylor Lapilus: “The crowd was very loud for my opponent, but that did not affect me. Physically, I wasn’t able to do what I needed to do to win the fight.”

Welterweight Bartosz Fabinski defeats Hector Urbina by unanimous decision
A very technical, wrestling-focused battle as Fabinski continually went for takedown attempts against his Mexican rival. Urbina tried in vain to block the takedowns and took a decent amount of damage – including under his left eye which caused referee Mario Yamasaki to call for a doctor to look at it late in the 2nd Round. In the end, it was Fabinski’s ground control (which totaled over 13 of 15 minutes) that earned him the judges’ unanimous decision (30-27, 30-27, 29-28) for his sixth-straight MMA win.

They said it:
Bartosz Fabinski: “My game plan was to go in there and take him down. I wanted to catch him with my elbows. I don’t think my performance tonight was perfect, but I was able to catch him and I did my best. I think I made my fans proud tonight. I want to go home and get some rest then get back to training. For me, this is only a sport, I don’t have bad blood with anyone, so I’ll look forward to whatever the UFC has in store for me next.”
Hector Urbina: “I want to say sorry to all my fans and the people here at the arena. Things didn’t go how I wanted. I cut a lot of weight and I couldn’t recover very well, but fighting here in my hometown, with my people, was something that I will never forget.”

Bantamweight Alejandro Perez defeats Scott Jorgensen by TKO
An unusual situation in this fight – with just seconds remaining in the first round, Perez threw a leg kick that landed on Jorgensen’s left calf and really wobbled the American fighter. Jorgensen struggled with his left leg but fought through it for several minutes in the 2nd Round until he attempted a leg kick with that left and collapsed to the ground at 4:26 of the round and verbally gave up. As a result, the winner of the first season of The Ultimate Fighter Latin American earned the victory by TKO.

They said it:
Alejandro Perez: “Honestly, I thought the fight had ended before going to the second round. But, Jorgensen showed a lot of heart and to continue despite his injury – he’s a true warrior. I saw that his back leg was hurt, so I kept kicking to make him think I would keep attacking that leg, but then I was able to throw my punches better as a result. I kept switching stances to throw him off and that’s how I was able to finish the fight.”
“I don’t believe that I’m becoming a star, I do think that I train really hard to put on good performances like this one. I feel I’m ready to fight anywhere and show my skillset to the world. I just want to keep working hard and getting experience, but I’m on my way up.”

Featherweight Andre Fili defeats Gabriel Benitez by KO
Fili ends the early Mexican domination here in Monterrey. The American took the fight to Benitez, and although the Mexican landed a few shots it was Fili who struck with a devastating high kick that pushed Benitez to the cage. From there, Fili threw punches at will sending his opponent to the ground before the fight is called a KO at 3:13 of the first round.

Andre Fili: “I got in there and Moggly is a really aggressive, tough competitor so it was a fast paced start. My corner kept yelling ‘don’t chase him’ and I kind of relaxed; we have a phrase: “enter the matrix” to get into the zone. I saw openings and I took them, everything you saw tonight are things we’ve been working on for months. Next, I’d really like to fight somewhere on the west coast close to where I live – somewhere in California. I’m a fighter though, so I’ll go wherever they send me.”
Gabriel Benitez: “It’s really hard losing like that. Things don’t always end like you plan or how you dream it, but feeling the support of all these people here helps me to get over it faster and be a stronger competitor.”

UFC Fight Night: Magny vs. Gastelum FIGHT PASS early prelims

Welterweight Alvaro Herrera defeats Vernon Ramos by TKO

That was quick! A second fight featuring a Mexican fighter and a second victory. Herrera’s first combination of the night ended softened up his rival before another right that landed just behind the ear dropped Ramos before the referee jumped in to declare a TKO at 30 seconds into the fight.

Lightweight Polo Reyes defeats Cesar Arzamendia by KO
Marco Polo Reyes sends his home-nation crowd wild! A perfectly landed left hook at 3:42 of Round 1 leads to a KO victory over Arzamendia. The crowd-favorite and former Ultimate Fighter Latin America Season 2 cast member just got up from being on the ground and threw the hook to send Arzamendia down and out.

Lightweight Michel Prazeres defeats Valmir Lazaro

Michel Prazeres gets the split decision victory (29-28, 29-28, 28-29). It was a back-and-forth affair with neither fighter taking control in 15 minutes of action leading to the split verdict. The difference on the judges’ cards turned out to be the second round – with Prazeres winning that on both of the cards that earned him the victory.

Michel Prazeres: “It was a fair decision because the fight was very even, that’s why two of the three judges gave me the fight. But, I was more effective and that’s why I won the fight.”
Valmir Lazaro: “I don’t know if there’s anything I could have done differently. I think I won the fight, but maybe if I threw more combinations it would have gone in my favor.”
